Tutorial: Installation and Setup of WPMU

Summary: This tutorial will take you through the basic steps of setting up Wordpress Multi-User (WPMU) on your website.

Requirements: In order to setup WPMU you will need a domain name and website hosting. The visual guides that you see below were taken through my webhosting CPanel (control panel) area. Website hosting companies vary, and the hosting account you have may not look the same as mine, but should have the same features and options.

Recommendations: If you do not have a domain name, I recommend Dynadot; the company is reputable and cheap! If you do not have website hosting, I recommend Bluehost – and the service is affordable and my favorite for hosting.

  • First, Download the most updated WPMU zip file. This will contain the entire installation package that you need in order to install WPMU on your site. >>Download WPMU Here<<
First, Download Wordpress MU Zip File.
  • Once downloaded, login to your website hosting account. Then go into the “File Management” area so you can upload the zip file and start the installation.
File Management Area.
  • In the file management area, find the place in which you want the files uploaded to. For example, I navigate to the root of my site. See screenshot here to understand where I am referring to. The /public_html/ folder is the one which contains all of my actual website files. Since this is a fresh install, I can overwrite all the files that are currently there. I want my WPMU site to be at: www.honestmarketingmovement.com.

  • Next, I upload the zip file to the root directory that I am currently in. You can see the image below that it has been successfully uploaded. Next, I click on the file name (wordpress-mu-2.6.1.zip) and then look for the option on the right of the screen that says, “EXTRACT FILE CONTENTS.” I click on that and see the new folder that appears.
  • Because I want this installation to be at the root of my site, rather than on a subdirectory like: http://www.honestmarketingmovement.com/blogs/, then I must do a few more things before I can finish the installation. Since I want overwrite (delete) the current website I have on my domain, I click on the /public_html/ folder and hit DELETE. I then find the new folder which was created when I extracted the zip file, and the new folder’s name is: /wordpress-mu-2.6.1/ (yours may differ) and I click on it. I then RENAME it to: /public_html/.
  • Then, I click on the /public_html/ folder and hit CHANGE PERMISSIONS. When the option appears, I then change the permissions (temporarily) to 777. I also go to the /public_html/wp-content/ folder and CHANGE PERMISSIONS temporarily to 777 as well.

  • I then open up a new window and navigate to my homepage at: http://honestmarketingmovement.com and the screen that pops up is as follows:
  • The screen you just saw is the installation welcome screen, which will guide you through the rest of the WPMU installation. The last thing that you need, in order to setup the site is a database. Not everyone is familiar with setting up databases, so I will also show you how to do that. It is pretty simple.
  • Now we’re at the part of the installation screen that says you need to enter in some database details. First, make sure you leave that installation screen or page open. We will need to log back into your website hosting CPANEL (control panel) or management area. It is the same place we started in when we began this installation. If you cannot remember, just check back to the second image in this tutorial, you will see the file management area. Rather than going into that area, you should click on the icon that says “MYSQL DATABASES.” Once in the MYSQL database area, you will see the screen below:
  • First thing you need to do is create a database. I already did, so you can see that I created a database and the name is “move_mu.” You can name the database and username anything that your heart desires, just be sure to remember it and write it down. To create a database, insert a name next to where it says “New Database” and then hit “Create Database.” Do the same for the Username and password. Lastly, be sure to ADD THE USER TO THE DATABASE and you are done there.
  • Return to the installation screen to fill in the database, user details and Database Host is almost always “localhost” (without the quotes).
  • You are DONE!!! All you need to do is change the permissions of the /public_html/ folder and the /public_html/wp-content/ folders to 755. Do NOT forget to do that, it is important for the security of your website.
  • Finally, you can navigate to your homepage (my homepage was: http://honestmarketingmovement.com) to login and start using the website. Once logged into the admin area, this is the first screen that I saw:

  • You can then manage all aspects of the website. You can upload themes and plugins. I will create another (shorter) tutorial on how to upload plugins and themes for WPMU and the best ones to use. I installed a plugin which allowed me to create default blog settings - so each person who setup a blog would startout with the same settings and categories, etc.
  • I hope this tutorial was useful!!!
  • Take a look at the site I set WPMU up on - Honest Marketing Movement and join!

Hey hey, Holly! Awesome, the first developed Honest Marketing Movement Site. I love it! I was going to talk to you about this on Skype a bit, but, there should be some Honest Marketing Movement badges made up for all members of the movement to “proudly display” them on their websites and blogs. What do you think of that? Either way, I love this…glad the main site is up!

Take Care Holly…I’ve got the software downloaded I will go through the rest in a bit here.

Thanks for the tutorial tho…I am gonna have to save that somewhere!

Oh! And I meant to say to Davin,

I think that’s a great idea about the “Honest Marketing Movement” badge. I was on your site yesterday and saw that “proud member of…” and thought “hey! that’s really cool!”

  • Holly (author) said:

Thanks Guys! This was totally inspired by Davin - he is such a great person and creating a big movement online. He came up with the “honest marketing movement” phrase/idea and he is awesome. I think WPMU could be a great way to get this going. I also think that we can create badges like Davin said. And then eventually we can also create a smaller graphic badge or Seals of approval (like the BBB) or something similar so that people can actually TRUST the site they are browsing. SO that means not everyone can be approved as an honest source, but it could be really useful for people who have a hard time finding a trustworthy seller/item to buy from (especially in the market of working online).

Hey well Miss Holly. Thank you for your awesomeness! I might have come up with the name…but, it’s your influence that has always guided me Holly.

Well, you know I got to thinking about the badge thing because if other people seen these badges on other websites and blogs etc., it would create curiosity as to what this was all about, and it would spread virally faster. They could click over, find out what’s “up with that”, and learn about what the movement is all about.

I think it’s a great idea anyway. I think there is another trusted online source which has a similar thing called “Honest Eline’ or something like that which E-Commerce sites can apply to get, but, I think once accepted they have to pay a yearly fee to wear that badge on their sites. I can’t quite remember the name.

But, I’m sure we can come up with our own image and different brand for the whole thing. But yes…their would definitely have to be qualifications met to ensure the integrity of the brand and name.

Thanx again Holly, and Dustin..thanx for visiting the new site. It’s coming along, I’ve been having to practically re-build everything, not just that site..so it’s been a lot of work putting things back together.

    Take care guys…

Guys, I think this is a great idea. I’ve already set up my blog.

However I have some questions and a technical problem (already) - and there doesn’t appear to be any CONTACT link on the site!

What’s the protocol here? Who do I contact and how?

    -Mark.

  • Dustin said:

Mark - you might be able to post your question here. If you’ve followed this blog much at all, you’ve probably noticed we carry on conversations in these comments all the time. LOL.

Otherwise, you might also consider using the contact link at the top of this page.

Hope that was at least somewhat helpful!

  • Mark Wilson said:

    Thanks Dustin.

I’ve worked out a way around the technical issue. I wanted to put an opt-in form on my blog, but WPMU doesn’t allow it for security reasons. So, I’m just going to link to my opt-in. Not ideal, but it will do.

BTW, you have a namesake in Ireland. Did you know? http://www.breakingnews.ie/entertainment/mhgbcwidauql/

    -Mark.

LOL!!! That really made me laugh, Mark!

I fear I may permanently be branded now!

    Thanks for the laugh, man.

Ok, Anna - Either you need glasses or treatment for ADHD! Which is it? Jason Bourne or Dustin the Turkey? Do you think Dustin the Turkey looks like Jason Bourne, too? If so I feel really bad for Matt Damon right about now…LOL

I saw that and I VERY SERIOUSLY considered changing my Gravatar. I wonder who I’d have to contact to make that ok! LOL

  • annaverawilliams said:

    Don’t worry - I can’t have a disease which doesn’t exist.

    So it’s glasses then…?

Wow did we get off topic here again! lol

Don’t you see the resemblance? I think that’s probably why they named him Dustin.

Matt Damon - well, I don’t know. But I wish Matt Damon was running for president right now.

Did you see his recent TV Interview?

    Hi Holly:
Thank you so much for posting this. I just found it running a search. I have been struggling with WP MU installation for a while, this should help me.

I just have two quick questions.

    1) you said, change the permission to 777 temporarily. Does that mean we should revert back again after installation?

    2) How about all those stories about wild card, etc. Most other people keep talking about. Do we need to pay attention to that. I am also using Bluehost. Should I bother with Wild card stuff?

Thank you so so much Holly :)

Hi Holly! I’m setting up my first WP MU on my mom’s domain - you said

“You can then manage all aspects of the website. You can upload themes and plugins. I will create another (shorter) tutorial on how to upload plugins and themes for WPMU and the best ones to use. I installed a plugin which allowed me to create default blog settings - so each person who setup a blog would startout with the same settings and categories, etc.”

Can you tell me where to find this plugin????????? What is it called?

I use Wordpress Cloner from Mass Automation when I make new blogs, but that’s a different story I think.

I must say that this is very nice tutorial, however to install WordPress MU with http://www.example.com/subpage is no difficult at all. This is very basic, just like standard WordPress installation.

What everyone is looking for is more like subdomain.example.com. That would be the right way to do it and of course more difficult then just WP MU subpage.

    Found this http://www.blogopreneur.com/2006/11/06/installing-wordpress-mu-on-a-cpanelwhm-server/

As far as on-site plugin installation, new themes etc. This new features including the no-hassle upgrade is in WP 2.7 Beta 3, not sure if they have this in MU as yet.

    Thanks,
    UKMK
