Russia, Ukraine and No One Speaks English! Update!!!

To be in a country in which few people speak English (even in the capital, Kiev) is such a strange experience. It puts you at the complete mercy and dependence of others. Thank God the people are so kind here. They have been unbelievably giving and helpful to us. Josh and I have been in the Ukraine since the 21st of April. I booked our tickets on a whim. I haven’t done any major traveling since I had my son Josh, and now he is 3 years old. He has been SO good on the trip; through all the ups and downs he has been the most composed and adjusted child! I would have posted more updates earlier but we haven’t had access to the internet. There was an unexpected convention of some type in Kiev and our hotel we orginally had booked was full and every other hotel in the city as well. Thankfully we found a serviced apartment to rent for a day (125.00 USD) and it was unbelievable. Just gorgeous. We traveled to Zhitomir region, about 200 kms west of Kiev (by train). We stayed in the worst hotel in the world (I won’t put the name because that’s rude) but I can’t wait to post pictures later. For some reason there was no heat and no hot water there. We did not bathe! The next day we went back to Kiev (where we are at now) and today we’ll fly to Paris, France. Josh and I went through so much on this little journey (which I’ll write about later) and he needs to have fun and be a kid again! I’m taking him to stay at the Disney Explorers Hotel (at DisneyLand Paris) and I’ll take him there tomorrow. We fly back to Thailand on the 29th of April!
I can’t wait to post pictures and tell of the adventures. Ukraine is an amazing place and the people are the kindest and most caring I have ever met. It’s not an easy place to travel to -not by any means-if you know the language though you’ll be fine (or if you know Russian). Everything is written in Ukrainian or Russian and don’t expect ANYONE to speak English or understand you!

Hi Holly. I went to Russia first when I was 16 and to Ukraine when I was 17. I did speak Russian because I learned it on the first trip. But I remember how it is. Funny to hear how some things have changed and some haven’t. My hotel in Chernigov was $35 a night and the most expensive in the town. It was about the same quality as I guess a Motel 6. But I was never in Kiev. I’m glad you are getting out and around. That’s always good.
Wow-Holly!
You and Josh sure had a cultural experience. You sure have the courage to experience change. You sure are daring to go out and encounter a culture so different than our western culture. You and Josh sure deserve a relaxing and fun time in Paris’ Disneyworld! Have a safe trip back to Chiang Mai!
