How to Find a Profitable, Popular Niche Now

Posted on 27. Oct, 2009 by Holly in Make Money

Finding your marketing niche is not only about finding an idea that is profitable to promote, but also about finding something you are passionate about as well. Having a personal interest or passion in the niche you choose to market, will give you the drive to push through to success. Although not imperative to your success with a niche, being passionate about it does help.

Brainstorm

If you have no idea what direction you should pursue online or what idea to promote, then the first step in finding your niche is to brainstorm your ideas, interests, passions and skills. It helps to know what topics you are passionate about – whether the topic is politics, health-related issues, trains, motorcycle parts or any other specific idea. If you aren’t really sure what you are passionate about, then take some time to discover those things that make you happy, things that you enjoy or topics that you are knowledgeable in or opinionated about.

If you are still unsure, try taking the Jung Typology Test, which is a series of simple questions that will provide you with in-depth insight into your personality, interests and strengths. Although it won’t tell you what niche to pursue, it will help you understand what types of work online you might be best suited for. I took it in 2003 and recently found the printout of the results. Besides describing me perfectly, it also helped me understand some of my business habits and faults. It also provided me with a list of jobs that would suit my personality, to include: entrepreneur, writer, marketer, missionary, to name a few. The personality type it gave me was the INFJ Counselor- if you try the test, feel free to share your type in the comments section below.

3 P’s of Niche-Finding

  1. Popular - It’s important that the niche you find is popular among a certain group of people, it doesn’t matter if the size of the group is quite small.
  2. Profitable - The niche should ideally have profit-potential. So, if the niche topic is about a support group for sufferers of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, the “profitable” part of that niche idea is that you could provide valuable information, plus promote additional books on the topic (which you would be an affiliate for and receive commissions on each sale) and/or promote a membership site for a support group. That is just an example of how one simple idea can be expanded to provide additional value and increase profits.
  3. Passionate - Although having a passion for the  niche topic is definitely important, it is not vital to your success in making money from the topic. I have a few websites that I am not passionate about at all, but I am making money from them. They are very specific niche markets.

Keep in mind, a niche topic is one which does not have massive competition online. The larger the market, the more work it will be for you to reach the top of the search engine if you have a website created for that topic.

Creative Method of Finding a Niche

You can come up with niche ideas daily, if you change your mindset and open yourself up to a different way of looking at things. For example, the other day I was looking online for a train table plan, so I could try to build a simple wooden table for my son’s trains. I was at a restaurant in Wisconsin which had a large 4 by 8′ table with two large holes in the middle, so the children could climb under and up into the center to play. As I searched online for plans, I couldn’t find one which showed me how to build that type of train table. After speaking with my brother, he explained how simple it would be to create that type of table. I did lots of searching on Google and the search engines for a simple basic train table plan, but came up with absolutely nothing.

My point here is, that as I discovered there was nothing available, ideas started to turn in my mind. Automatically I realized if I had the time I could have my brother for example, help me draw up plans and put them into a PDF document and sell them online on a simple website that specialized only in that particular train table plan. It seems like a simple idea because it is. The simpler the idea, the easier it is to execute and start profiting from it. If you tell yourself, “I can’t draft a document for a train table,” or “I can’t cover that topic because I’m not an expert,” then the only success you have with anything will be directly related to what you believe you can or cannot do. If you aren’t an expert, either become one or outsource the work to someone on Scriptlance for just dollars. In addition to profiting from any sales of the train table plan, I could also put links to online stores which sells trains and accessories.

Method that Works

Over the years, I’ve used a simple method to finding a niche and profiting from it. The steps in between – if followed, can truly bring you success with your niche. It’s worked for me.

  1. Keyword research to find very specific keywords related to the niche
  2. Solidified the keywords I chose & created a list of about 10-15 article ideas
  3. Paid someone on Scriptlance to write the 10-15 quality articles
  4. Bought a domain name related to the niche
  5. Setup the site, posted the articles and let it go

Solid Niche-Finding & Website Building

Although I have shared my steps to finding a niche and setting it up to profit, the whole process can be much more in-depth. For some people, creating a simple website for their niche and using and reaching the ultimate profit-potential, is something that they need more help with. If you need more guidance and a system that is laid out for you step-by-step, then I recommend the Niche Profit Classroom 2.0.

The NPC program has full video tutorials (which are brand new, not rehashed resale rights stuff), which teach you: Market Research, Preparation, Mini-Course, Website Building, Traffic and Profit Boost, plus bonuses and keyword lists. This is not just a bunch of useful niche-related materials – it is a SYSTEM that walks you through each step of finding a niche, setting up a website and profiting from it.

The main reason that I joined the site personally, is because they also give you the most professional, high-quality, custom-built Wordpress template for your niche website or sales page. It looks better than any template I’ve purchased in the past (and I’ve bought many) and the customizations are ideal for marketers who want to create a squeeze page, build a list and of course make sales. This 13-Module course will walk you step-by-step through the process of setting up your first money-making Niche Marketing 2.0 website. The course contains 13 core modules plus 1 bonus module, altogether totaling around 160 step-by-step videos. Each module contains video training, action steps, and in some cases – downloadable resources. These materials are designed to enhance your learning experience and help you to grasp the material even better.

Hi Holly, it’s always fascinating to hear about your niche research because we all know you’re so good at it :)

I too always look for affiliate opportunities in anything I can’t find online these days, but my difference is I often worry that I ‘can’t’ do something if it seems daunting – something I’m trying to overcome!

I totally agree with all you say in this blog post – I think a big thing is just taking action and following a plan we know that works :) Recently I’ve just been focused on getting daily updates onto my new site – nothing else – and it’s really starting to pay off.

Hope you are settled in your new home now :)

    Talk soon,

    Michelle

Hi Michelle! I understand your feelings about things being daunting and an maybe not pursuing something because so much work will be involved. I struggle with this too. Then I end up starting it and sometimes not finishing right away. It’s tough to stay focused. But, if you want to make the money, it does take some time upfront to get the niche website going. Once done, the majority of the work is over – so it helps to keep that in mind.

I also think it’s great you’re doing daily updates on your site – I know what a discipline that is. It’s tough! But it’s totally worth it. Before I moved I had been posting nearly every day. If you are really getting into blogging Michelle, check out David Risley’s blog http://www.davidrisley.com because his free reports have really helped me understand how blogging can also be something profitable. Ok hope it helps! It’s great to hear from you! Hope Dominic is doing well!

I took the Jung Typology Test. Come out as INTJ / Mastermind. Good company with Sir Isaac Newton and Ulysses S Grant . . . LOL.

No problem Josh and great to hear from you Garry. Did you find that the INTJ results described you well? Mine seemed to describe me better than I could describe myself…definitely interesting!

Nice post Holly, thanks for the info.
I am an ISFJ, mostly service jobs, helping others…seems to fit my profile well.

Interestingly enough, I just started writing for a client who developed this system called energy profiling. It goes beyond personality assessments because sometimes aspects of our personality are learned from our environment or develop as coping mechanisms form our childhoods.

I got the book for free as a reference for writing and I was really intrigued by it. It helps you find your true, innate nature, the one you were born with. The profiling is based on science, the 4 elements present in the universe. It is very interesting.

I like it because you can also determine your type from facial features and expressions which do not lie. Many of the people who read the book thought they were one type and then after realizing who they really were, they had an amazing transformation as they werent living their truth most of their lives. They were one way as children and were forced to adjust to others as a result of their environment, and they didnt realize it until now.

She also has a program called “dressing your truth” which helps women to dress, accessorize, etc. according to their type. the befores and afters are amazing! It looks like these women took 20 years off of their age.

The website is http://www.myenergyprofile.com. When I get any more info, I will let you know.

    Thanks for a great post!

Hi, I just wanted to let you know I clicked the myenergyprofile link, and got a trojan warning from my very efficient virus checker.. I don’t want to be a party pooper at all as I like the look and sound of the site and actual idea.. but I don’t think my virus-software gets it wrong very often?? It’s Kaspersky – it’s always been great, so I trust it..
Anyway, the other thing is, I’ve got no idea what it even means – whether or not someone else might have attached it to the site? I’ve got no idea (I guess I’m pretty normally hopeless with the ‘techie’ side of computers :) – but I just thought it might warrant a warning to everybody? Computer techies please butt in and correct me if I’m wrong!! And again – I really like the concept so thanks anyway for the link! Maybe it would be worth emailing the website author and letting her know..
Well anyway .. thanks again Holly too for another great post.. Hi to everyone out there in the internet marketing world!
    :) Anna.

Hi Anna (the other Anna) –

I use Kaspersky as well and I occasionally have the problem you mention. Even on a friend’s site :) I am not getting the error message now, on this website. And if I remember correctly, I have tried Niche Profit’s Classroom in the past when there was a $1 trial.

It was excellent material and I will probably go back to it. The only reason I didn’t stay was because I was already a part of several other memberships, and already had a lot of previously purchased study materials to study before I could take on a new one.

    I hope this helps!

  8. I have to give a complete 2 thumbs up on Holly’s recommendation of Niche Profit Classroom. I love that membership, and really find it invaluable myself.

I doubt I’ll ever leave that membership. It’s definitely one of the best I’ve seen online personally. It’s also really changed the path and focus of my current and future marketing efforts.

    My two cents worth…

Thanks Davin! You’re the only reason I am a part of that site – so thank you for the invaluable resource. It helps a lot – and I absolutely love the beautiful, professional template they give for Wordpress. The tutorials are really useful.

    Hi Holly,

I must say I have missed your posts, and this is a great one. Oddly enough I am in the midst of writing a report on finding your niche for an upcoming class. Do you mind if I add the Jung Typology Test to the report? I remember having to take that in college or somewhere along the way……to long to remember:)

I have listened to quite a few interviews with the guys from NPC but never took advantage of the membership, I may be rethinking that:)

@ Jenna I love Carol Tuttle I was going to become a Dressing your Truth Consultant however the program is closed for now. I am glad you mentioned her, I follow her closely.

Jenny, I am so glad you like Carol. I really love the program, especially the Dressing Your Truth. I would love to become a consultant also. I know she has an online course on the site but I dont know if it is the course to become a consultant. I think it is just a class. Anyways, I love what she is doing for people, its really great.

Thanks Anna(the other Anna) for the insight with the link. :)

This “Intuitive” personality is spending way too much time on counterproductive aspects of internet marketing.
I went through that very long NPC2 web page and found it extremely interesting. With all the courses available for IM investing $67/month for NPC2 is a comparative bargain.By now you probably know I do a lot of research as part of my personality and thus feel your recommendation for niche marketers is superb..The included ,over the top, hosting and auto responders make the package even more inviting.
I would be curious to know how many web sites and niches you are personally involved in.Yet so still make time for this blog and the forums, never mind all the e-mails you personally answer.

Another way to find niches is to look at our own expertise – many industries are still catching on with the times. For example, mine is civil engineer and it’s still catching up to speed with RSS feeds, twitter, etc.

    Hi Holly,

Really great post. I checked out Niche Profit Classroom website. Looks like an awesome program. I do think it will be something I will look into in the future. At the moment I still need to finish the other programs I have signed up for! :|

I really like the Jung test. I am an INFJ. Reading the summaries was really interesting. They described me to a tea!

    Hope all is going well.

    HI Everyone,
This is my first post. Walter has a good point I think in finding niches at our own expertise. Mine is in health care, specifically nursing. However, I am concerned that this niche is just too much for a newbie like me. It seems like I would have too much competition. What does everyone else think? I would also appreciate any other help. What is meant by solidified the keywords after finding keywords for the niche? It seems that writing and submitting articles as well as blogs are a great way to promote an affiliate site.

Ok here I am again. I was wondering about 2 things. First, how do I get the free website promoted on this site? Second, if I sign up for GVO and well hopefully make money from this venture, can I get “all of their goodies” such as a website, hosting, autoresponder, etc for the $44/month? Ok there is an idea I have. If I write an article about a site I am promoting and want to build a list. I would put the link to my autoresponder in the resource box in order for me to gather their name and email. I am wondering if this would be a problem since I would have to provide a link to send them to the sales page of the affiliate program who will also want the same info. People might not want to submit their info twice. Any ideas?

    Hi Holly,

In Method that Works step 5 — You mentioned “Set up
the site, posted the articles let go.”

I had found a niche. I set up a site and I already put 2 articles and until now Google hasn’t indexed my site yet.

You had set up my health site more than a year ago. After
I put my very first article Google indexed my site in 10 minutes. Can you tell me what plug ins do I need to get my site indexed by Google? I’ll appreciate if you can post a tutorial also. I love the way how you present tutorials.

    Thanks,
    Nellie
