“Framing” or Packaging Your Online Presence

It was Mark Joyner who a few years ago coined packaging as “framing”. It’s much like fancy icing and design on a cake which makes the whole cake become a whole lot more appealing.
When we are talking about on-line marketing it can be any product or service in which you are offering. Packaging is very important in how the public perceives the value of your product or service. There are are also different types of packaging for helping with your on-line success.
First we will look at product packaging. We will then follow with “personal packaging” which is very, very important to you as an on-line business owner.
Product Packaging
For the purpose of this example let’s take a product such as a very nice “engagement ring” in which a guy is going to purchase for the woman he loves. He has finally worked up the courage to ask this woman to marry him and is now setting out on his journey to purchase a ring that he is hoping will mean the world to his mate for the rest of her life.
On his journey downtown he comes across a man on the street that just so happens to mention the fact that he has a friend who has “just the ring” for him. The man is led down several different off streets, and alleys, to go and look at this ring in which the man is speaking of. They finally reach their destination which happens to be a seedy looking bar in which under normal circumstances he wouldn’t normally enter. But, he thinks to himself that he would really like to have a look at this ring since it might be “just what he is looking for”.
The two men enter the bar and in a corner booth near the back of the bar they sit down with the man that has this ring. This man who has the ring seems to be a very nice guy, but upon looking at him he could tell that the man hasn’t exactly been taking very good care of himself lately. He hadn’t shaved in days, and it he sort of looked like he just got out of bed. Fair enough, the “groom to be” is still enticed to have a look at the “ring”.
The man possessing the ring reaches into his pocket and pulls out an astoundingly beautiful 1.0 carat diamond gold engagement ring. The ring is so beautiful that the “groom to be” begins to wonder if he can afford such a ring. It’s exactly what he was looking for and more. He is very excited about the fact that he may be able to give the woman he’s going to propose to such a ring. He’s thinking that this ring would surely touch her heart and mean the world to her.
He decides to inquire how much the ring will cost him. The man holding the ring replies to him that the ring will cost him $250 dollars.
He’s now thinking to himself, “My god, only $250 dollars. This is incredible, I can actually afford this ring without any problem whatsoever!”
He then begins to reach down to pull out his wallet and an unsettling feeling starts to come over him. He’s thinking to himself the ring must be stolen. He inquires, and as it turns out the ring is not stolen, but, the man possessing it happens to own a chain of pawn shops. This ring was one of the best that has ever came into his newest shop, and he knew this was a special occasion and he was doing a favor for his friend so he chose to bring this particular ring down to the bar for him to look at.
Although, the explanation does seem fair enough to the “groom to be” he still has a feeling in his heart that this situation just won’t do. He’s thinking to himself, that if the love of his life had ever found out about where and how he obtained this ring, it would completely devalue the worth of what the ring is supposed to mean to her. He decides to turn down the ring and explains that he will keep it in mind, but, he wanted to do a little more searching first.
On his way back over to his car he walks passed a jewelery store and decides that he is going to go in and have a look at what they have to offer in the store. He makes his way over to glass case which holds women’s engagement rings inside. He immediately notices that the exact same ring is inside the glass case. The ring is presented in a beautiful ring box, which is lined with velvet. It also contains a very nice card which explains the ring’s authenticity of the brand of ring. This looks much better to him. It’s presented in such a more compelling way, and he is very enticed to look at the ring.
He calls the jewelery store attendant over and asks if he can take a look at the ring. The attendant pulls the ring out and hands it over to him. He can’t help but notice that the price on the ring is $6,000 dollars. He is thinking that it’s very expensive, but perhaps if he can pull some extra shifts at his current job, and pay for the ring with the store’s payment plan, that he will be able to pay off the ring in time. With those thoughts in his head, he decides that he is going to go ahead and purchase the ring for his girl!
After leaving the store he is completely enthralled in emotion because he is so excited by the fact that he just found the girl of his dreams the “one ring” that is going to become the true sign of devotion to her that he has been trying to express for so long. He is also feeling very good in his heart about how he obtained that special ring for his “special girl”.
What we can learn from this “not so short” story is that “packaging is everything”.
The packaging in this case didn’t only matter in how the product is presented in terms of the jewelry box, and also the glass case that held the ring prior to purchase, but, it also mattered in terms of how the ring is obtained and how people place value on ethics, integrity and honesty.
If we are speaking in terms of your product or service you are marketing on-line we have the aid of using pleasing layouts, graphics, videos and words.
In most cases, you also only have one quick chance to grab your web site visitors attention and relay the type of impression you’d like to leave on your prospects. Please remember this, and use this example in the most appropriate ways possible for your product or service.
Personal Packaging
Personal packaging on the Internet is just as important as the way in which you package your products. Why? Simply, because the way you present yourself to others has a lasting and growing effect on their impression of you. The impression and the way you carry yourself on-line and in your life is always open to scrutiny. When you are an expert in your field on the Internet you must present yourself accordingly. The end result of practicing this, and always keeping it in mind will ultimately bring you a more profitable business. Just the same as packaging your products, “It’s Important”.
Firstly, the way you package yourself can give you authority, respect, and can also lead all the way up to dominating your chosen niche. Let’s have a look at a few examples of personal packaging and I’m sure you will understand why it is so important to your business!
This first example is just a randomly chosen web site. I decided to show you a brand new blog from Miguel Alvarez. I know Miguel Alvarez through being a fellow member of Social Power Linking. His new site is called The Marketing Factor. Miguel is the owner of Thirdsphere, a hosting company that has been around for quite some time. Keep in mind when looking that Miguel is very successful on-line. He has been at this for a while, and it is most likely that he has his own staff working on such a site as this for him. These examples are here to inspire you and to give you an idea of how presenting yourself in as professional a manner as possible is so important.
I’m sure you can see that Miguel’s site exudes authority. It can’t be helped but seen in a very serious and professional light.
In the next example, we don’t need to look any further than Holly’s personal blog. Holly presents herself, her business, and her professionalism right out there for all to see. Let’s have a quick look.
As you can see from Holly’s blog. She uses many elements to convey a professional and authoritative presentation that commands respect. She uses a very professional business like picture of herself directly in the header of her site. You will also notice that Holly uses many professional looking images on her blog which convey a serious approach to her business.
Holly has definitely taken the design elements into careful consideration as you notice she has all of the different sections of her blog carefully categorized for readers to access the different sections with ease.
If you also notice on Holly’s blog she covers many different types of articles on her blog. It isn’t only about marketing. It’s about her personal experiences, some of her beliefs, and even her day to day life. She allows readers to truly understand who she really is as a person, which is a very welcome and respectable quality to her many readers. She clearly displays her helpful nature to people which is one of the reasons our dear friend Holly Mann is so well respected in the online industry.
This article should help you to realize the importance in your presentation of your products and also yourself. Remember, in the on-line world sometimes we only have a few seconds in which to leave a positive impression on your website visitors. This positive professional approach to your business will help you to push your business to higher levels in an accelerated amount of time.

Hey Davin, great post! I agree that packaging has a major impact, even moreso for the personal packaging we do.
How you present yourself, will have a direct impact on the preception of your products. There is so much here that many simply overlook, but if we just take the time to ponder these things, we’ll all be better off.
thanks bud!
Davin, this was an extremely well-written and helpful article. I’m very impressed. I was glued to it. Thank you very much for this assistance.
I agree wholeheartedly ,but what does one do if we are not all as good looking as Holly and our site requires a picture of us as ‘packaging’ ?
Or we are anti-photogenic ?
How do we package our site content other than the content is the package ?
While we all can agree that Holly is a very pretty woman, and pleasant to look at, I think if you are relating the article to physical beauty you may be missing the point somewhat.
If packaging had a everything to do with physical attributes then a I guess Tellman Knudson would have been in a lot of trouble. There are lots of very successful marketers who understand the process and build on it accordingly. Check out people like Ken McArthur, Dan Kennedy, Michael Stewart and the list goes on. While I’m sure being as pretty as Holly is helps, physical beauty is not “the end all, of end alls”. Keep in mind you can also be packaging your brand in the same types of ways.
Thanx for the comments guys. I really enjoyed writing this article for Holly and yourselves.
Davin
