I first lived in Thailand when I was 16/17 years old and was an exchange student with the Rotary Club. I lived in this foreign land for 6 months and had a very rewarding (sometimes very difficult) experience. The people and culture are so very different from in the USA - neither better nor worse - just very different. For 6 years I yearned and longed to return to Thailand but never had enough money to do so. After working like crazy (saving nothing at all) and joining the Army (still saved nothing) and finally working in Iraq (FINALLY saved some cash - took risking my life to do so). So after working in Iraq for 6 months as a civilian contractor at Baghdad airport, rather than returning to the states, I immediately flew back to Thailand. It changed so much - but was still in my heart. The story could go on and on from there - but basically since that trip I have lived in Thailand more than the states. My son and I are really settled in here now and he’s attending an amazing school - I can’t complain - I love the mountains of northern Thailand. I’m originally from Wisconsin and I’ve been away for too long to readjust to that cold winter weather!
