Best Wordpress Mobile Phone Plugins

Posted on 28. Jun, 2009 by Holly in Free Software, Wordpress

How does your website look when you view it on your mobile phone?

If it loads slowly, if the text looks too small or if it looks cluttered – you may want to make it mobile-phone compatible. If your website is self-hosted and was created with Wordpress, there are a few simple Wordpress plugins that can fix this for you right away. The plugins will not affect how your website appears when viewed from a normal computer. When viewed from a mobile phone, it will look sleek, clutter-free and easier to navigate through.

MobilePress Transforms Your Blog to Mobile-Friendly Theme

The MobilePress plugin is a great option for turning your Wordpress website into a mobile-friendly website. Once you install the plugin, you can use one of the theme templates or customize how you want your website to look when viewed by mobile phones. This plugin is great because it is flexible, and offers viewing options across a variety of mobile phone devices. MobilePress is also compatible with Wordpress versions 2.3 to 2.8 (the newest version). You can get more information and download MobilePress here.

WPTouch Creates Sleek Theme for iPhoneswptouch

The WPTouch plugin transforms your website into a sleek mobile theme for iPhones. I’m currently using this for my blog, but may switch over to  MobilePress as it offers viewing options for a variety of mobile phone types. WPTouch was created specifically for viewing your website on the iPhone. The themes look sleek and offer a stylish way to share your website for mobile-phone viewing. It is compatible with Wordpress versions 2.3 to 2.7.1 and you can get more information and download WPTouch here.

Your timing on this post is nearly perfect, Holly. I happened to check your blog from my iPhone the other day and noticed you had made it iPhone friendly. I very much wanted to comment about it on whichever post I was reading at the time, but didn’t really have an appropriate segue. (right, like all my comments are specific to the post, right?)

Anyway, very cool, Holly. I want to implement this on my blogs. Thanks for sharing!

Het Dustin -that is so great to hear!!! Which plugin do you think you might use? I love this one but I’m not sure how it looks when viewed on other mobile phone types.

Well, the one you’re using is pretty slick for sure. I like the comment badges on the “main page.” It’s very comfortable to use on the iPhone. It even loads fairly quickly on Edge (I checked it out when I was out in the middle of nowhere earlier this week).

A part of me wants to use the on you’ve got on here, but there’s something to be said about being mobile friendly for the other mobile phones out there. Have you done any testing to see what your blog would look like on the iPhone with the other plugin?

    Once again, VERY cool!

Thanks Dustin … painful thought! Maybe I’d rather not know. I just installed the plugin on BFN. Haven’t had a chance on the others yet. Could you have a look, and drop me an email? Then if I need to tweak the settings I can.

Hi Anna! I am looking at your http://www.buildingfromnothing.com website from my iPhone and it isn’t looking so good! Sorry. Were there settings that you could change for the plugin? I’m just curious. If my digital camera had batteries I would take a picture of what I see for you. But basically, it is only showing a tab for HOME and it shows the tweetme plugin and next to it says: 17th Apr 09. And View or Post Comments – but I don’t see any posts. I’m not sure what’s wrong..hopefully others can take a look at it. Maybe there is an online tool that shows how the site would look if viewed by other browsers and phones. I will check into this now…

Holly, have you tried Mobile Press on your site yet? I am wondering if the theme she’s using is somehow not compatible with Mobile Press. She said something about Hybrid News showing excerpts from recent posts and I am wondering if you’re using the same (since your home page shows excerpts). She and I are both using Mobile Press and neither of us changed any of the default settings…yet mine seems to work while hers does not.

Also, FYI – if you press the home button and the sleep button on your iPhone at the same time and then release, it’ll take a screen shot that will show up in your camera roll. Another nifty tool that the iPhone has :-) I used that this morning to send Anna some pictures of her blog using Mobile Press.

    Hi Holly!

Great to see you promoting mobile plugins for wordpress, but have you checked out mine?

I’ve had a look at your blog on an iPhone and although it works, it doesn’t really look like the web version. I’ve also checked it out on my Nokia N73 and I’ve got the website instead of the mobile one!

Mine is written so that styling is carried across both platforms, URLs are retained and every device in the world is catered for.

If you’d like to take a look at it, the homepage can be found here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wapple-architect/

There’s plenty of screenshots of it in action (or check out http://mobilewebjunkie.com on your phone) and it’d be great to hear your feedback on it if you want to give it a go!
