10 Weird Habits of True Internet Marketers
Posted by Holly in Blunt Honesty, Interesting
Are you a “true” Internet marketer yet?
- You’re a caffeine addict. You drink 5-20 caffeine-filled beverages per day, sometimes more. Not only do you consume an insanely unhealthy number of sodas, coffees and teas – but you also
leave evidence of it all around your desk and work area. Your trash cans are heaping and overloaded with soda cans. You know it’s serious when soda cans topple out and fall out of it every time you move your chair. Or, when you end up in the hospital because your stomach has bloated out like a pregnant woman or child with dysentery because you’ve had too many poison-filled processed diet sodas. (This actually happened to me, but it was the soda that irritated a past ulcer). - You eat meals at your computer. It’s too much of a hassle for you to actually eat a meal at a table or on the couch (for the Americans – lol joking) – so you eat at your computer desk, or in front of the computer. Or, like the incredible JK Swopes, you eat at your computer, while working and video taping yourself for your weekly roundups and updates for readers. Then you show your readers what you are eating, whiling giving them web site updates. I think it is hilarious – but it means that you are working a little too much!
- You wake up at least two times per night to check your e-mail from your phone. It is true. I started doing this several months ago. Randomly, I would wake up in the middle of the night to read e-mails and blog posts that were interesting. It is a strange and unhealthy habit to get into.
- You dream about HTML and Web sites. Yes this is odd. I have actually had dreams about designing sites and about PHP and HTML code.
- You have NO social life. Your life has become virtual. You are a computer person and live inside and within the realms of the powerful world wide web. You socialize online, with friends on their blogs, but have very few real life friends. If you do have the real human friends – you don’t spend too much time with them because most of your precious time is spent in the virtual world.
- You Go Crazy if Your Internet Connection is Down for even a Minute. If you ever, by some horrible tragedy, experience an Internet Connection failure or connectivity problem: you absolutely break down or go nuts. You get upset or cannot handle the situation and order the Internet Service Provider to fix the problem Immediately. It becomes almost a life and death situation – you feel so strongly that you need it on at all times.
- Your Internet Life Affects the Kids. When your 3-year-old child starts typing away on the computer next to yours, talks about ebay and Google – you know you need to take a rest from Internet Marketing. When your toddler tells you that he can’t play because he has to finish his computer work – there’s a problem! (Yes, that has happened with my little guy Josh). So, a suggestion is to try to separate your work time from you family time. It is tough but very important to keeping a balanced life – for family and for work.
- Personal Hygiene at the Desk. For the ladies, the desk is not the place to be doing your nails, putting on makeup or plucking your eyebrows. I’ve done it myself. For the men, shaving is something to be done inside the bathroom – not at the desk. Do guys do that?
- You have pain in your knees, legs or hands. This occurs when you sit for too long in front of a computer. I have a habit of sitting with my legs crossed and I experience a lot of knee pain as a result. I sometimes have severe pain in my hands and one can also strain the eyes. Overall, it’s important to get off your butt and take a walk when you’ve been inside for too long or working too much.
- You Wake Up at 3 or 4 AM regularly. This odd habit can lead to extreme exhaustion, anger and bad moods. But, for those who work from home, and still hold “normal” jobs or have families to care for – it might be one of your only options to have peace and quiet to allow you to work.
Does anyone else have any of these odd or disgusting Internet Marketing habits?

Wow, what are you reading me like a book Holly? That is my life..ha, ha.
Well, really, a lot of it is! Except for the nails thing, and I don’t actually use a cell phone. My computer is about 6 feet from my bed, so I wake up and actually turn on the computer to check emails at that time. Social life?…I used to have one.
As for the shaving at the desk. No, I don’t actually do that, but, oddly enough I sometimes forget to shave for days!
That was great! Thanx Holly

OH SNAP!!! You’re all up in my area! Though, I’m not much of a caffeine drinker, mostly cranberry juice, water, or some other type of juice for me!
But uuuuuuuuhh…yeah, you know my schedule, I do get up around the times you specified, though I won’t mention exactly when! Hopefully that can change soon….when I no longer have one of those “job” things to go to
Great list, I identified with it easily….I think you’ve been watching me my dear Holly.

Hey Holly, nice blog! Haven’t talked to you in ages. How is everything?
Davin, I’ve seen you twice in one month now. How are you?
This post is really a checklist for me, lol.
1.You’re a caffeine addict – Yes! I really think I would go into some sort of anaphylactic shock without it. And I tell myself it’s ok because soda is cheaper than gas, lol.
2.You eat meals at your computer – All the time. Sometimes I skip meals if I am really involved in something. Or get more caffeinated soda, lol. I rarely cook. My daughter and I eat out frequently.
3.You wake up at least two times per night to check your e-mail from your phone – I do this too. And the worst part is that if an email is important enough I get up to answer it and then get sucked in to answering more and end up staying up for awhile.
4.You dream about HTML and Web sites – I do! Lately CSS has been entering into the equation and it is now more of a nightmare, lol.
5.You have NO social life – I’m officially a social recluse, lol. Seriously, someone emailed and asked was I still alive a while back, lol.
6.You Go Crazy if Your Internet Connection is Down for even a Minute -My back up plan is my laptop and the wifi at the Books-a-Million in my city. Too many people try to talk to me there though. Maybe I can start sitting in the car so I’m not distracted, lol.
7.Your Internet Life Affects the Kids – My daughter tells me I’m distracting her from her work, lol. And she’s tell me she’s almost through or give her a few more minutes:) For Christmas she wants a laptop, cellphone, and ipod. Once she asked me could I move her computer to her little playroom because my music was distracting her from toontown.com game.
8.Personal Hygiene at the Desk – I’ve done it; shaved with an electric razor. Also brushed my teeth, except for the spitting part, lol. Maybe I can put a sink nearby;)?
9.You have pain in your knees, legs or hands – My mouse hand gets so tired. Sometimes I experience shoulder pain. My eyes get dry very often especially late in the day.
10.You Wake Up at 3 or 4 AM regularly – I used to have big problem with this about a year ago. It became a bad habit. That’s one of the reasons I check my email via cellphone now – only sometimes I slip and do end up staying up.
Holly, at least you have a bag in your little trash can, lol:) A few weeks ago I took some random pics after putting more memory in my daughter’s barbie digital camera. I uploaded them and added comments:

Oh my god!!! Holly you are amazing. How did you KNOW???
Numbers 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9. Yep. I could add a few too!
I don’t drink sodas a lot. But coffee and my other caffeinated drink – Yerba Mate Tea! I get it shipped over from the US! Many kilos! And instead of overflowing garbage cans I have CLOGGED drains. Did you know that loose tea is one of the worst, if not the worse, DRAIN cloggers on earth? It only takes a little bit, here and there. Then one day your sink is stuck.
Of course I eat at the computer. I have actually been doing it for years! In fact, since I bought your book! It’s your fault Holly. My poor husband used to try to get me to eat at the table with other people and have a social life. I am like, “I do have a social life. Right here on my computer! What are you complaining about!
And actually once in a while I do eat at a table. Like once every few months. And then I am always like, “Wow! I’m eating at a table! This is interesting!” When I was on vacation visiting my family in the US I was usually parked on the kitchen table. My sister one day had to ask me to move my laptop for a minute so that her daughter could wipe that part of the table! After several days of cleaning the rest of the table.
But you really got me on point number 5. I have been thinking about it lately, too. I have been trying to get myself out and about. And then what do I do? I go to the park, with my computer. Or I go to a cafe – with my computer. Of course! Even if I eat in restaurants I usually choose the laptop-friendly kind. And I once had a thought that restaurants should have signs “we are laptop friendly,” or “we have outlets.”
Oh, you know I wrote a lens about a similar phenomena, it was expressed more in regards to Squidoo. But it really was about I.M. in general. I wrote it a while ago and forgot about it! But there are some “tips and tricks” in there
http://www.squidoo.com/addictedtosquidoo
And right now is a good example. It is 3:22 am. I should be … well, you know what I should be doing at 3:22 am! At 2:06 I was “logging off” and “about to shut down my computer.” But I just check this and I check that … oh, I think I should sign up for that affiliate program and bla bla bla …
By the way Holly, your blog looks GREAT! I really enjoy seeing what you are doing with it! And you are encouraging me to post more here! Right now I am busy with packing, my bedroom is always in varying states of disarray with piles of god-knows-what being sorted all over the place. And when I do have time on my computer I try to work on that big long you-know-what that I’m working on. But I can’t resist commenting on blogs sometimes. Oh this comment is probably the size of a post. Oh well! Good night! (Let’s see if I really make it to go to bed or if I’m back here in 10 minutes – LOL).

Hey Jerry! It is so great to hear from you again – it’s been ages. How are you? Your reply to the post is very funny! Your daughter is gorgeous – she is so cute. Is that Dora the Explorer on her computer screen? How old is she? The trash can in your picture is hilarious – very similar to mine!

Hi Tina! It’s ok – I think you can be dedicated but be much better at balancing things than I am right now. I wasn’t always like this – it becomes really difficult to keep things organized and routine. My problem (which causes me to work too much) is that I am really way too hands-on and I love to learn more about html, php and web design stuff. Learning that stuff on your own, through trial and error is very very time consuming. So, the “smart” internet marketers generally outsource those tasks. I just enjoy it too much.

Hey Anna! Thank you for posting this and telling me about your post yesterday. I would never have known. For some reason it went into my spam folder – but I “de-spammed” it.
Your reply was really funny and it’s good to hear from you. How are you feeling? Are you ok? You sound so busy and I understand – same here. I have a lot to tell you but I keep getting pulled into things. I will find time – hopefully (I hope to God I can wake up at 3 am to work) and I will contact ya! Lately, I my phone (which has an alarm) has been dying and turning off at night. So I wake up late – at 6 or 7 or 8 am instead of 3 or 4! LOL…Somehow, I honestly feel better waking up earlier. If I wake up at 8, I have a headache immediately. Any else have that? I have no idea why and I don’t really understand it.

As I sit at my desk at 7:13 in the morning (been here for two hours) staring at three empty Gatorade bottles, one green tea and a coffee cup I begin to really look around. On the giant speaker (for the tv) that is on my desk, there is a pile of papers, books and software boxes. I have no idea what their purposed was. I would not even want to get into that it would take time away from staring at my email. You know staring at it makes you receive it faster! Not!
Seriously I have the disease! I too build websites. I use an HTML editor (yes I cheat)but I still have to deal with HTML code and yes, still dream about it.I have built whole websites in my slumber. In a sense that helps because it puts great new ideas in your head, however it does not give you a restful nights sleep.
I also eat at my computer. It drives my family crazy! I lose track of time and would rather write an article than go shopping. Unless it is a trip to Staples, but even then my list is ready and it better not take more than a half hour.
Don’t even ask me to make dinner unless I offer, I will be in the middle of something. Unless I call you or you want to talk business don’t bother me.
What is this about waking every 4 hours? You have to actually go to bed to get up. If going to bed a 3:00 and getting up at 7:00 counts, I guess I get up every four hours!
Putting on makeup at the computer… What is makeup? Oh yeah, the stuff I used to use when people actually saw me. I used ot be one of those people that would not go anywhere until I had my makeup on. Those days are gone!!! I might manage to get on a dab of mascara and a smear of lip gloss for special occasions, (when anyone can get me out of the house) usually when someone says restaurant! There was a time before I became a geek, that I was in shape. My clothes just don’t fit like they used to (just don’t fit). Let’s say I graduated.
I used to give permission to my son subconsciously while typing away until one day he was gone for hours and I had no idea where he had gone. When he finally returned I was angry and he became flustered and said, “you said I could!” That was a wake up.
Wow! My son just enticed me away from my computer…He said ER-911 Snickers from Dutch Brothers. Oh yeah, now we are talkin’. So now here I sit with enough caffeine to jump start a heart!
Have you ever found yourself blankly staring at the monitor screen with absolutely nothing going on upstairs? That is scary! That is when you know you have turned geek!

Yeah that’s me, spamming away on poor Holly’s blog! Anyway, thank you for finding my comment!
I am feeling okay, still a bit of this flu lingering, but not a big deal. I just never eat so I am always hungry. Mainly I am trying to get all this sorting and packing done. It’s so much work!!! Once that is over it will be a lot easier for me and my laptop to spend some good quality time together.
I can’t believe you wake up at 3 or 4, that’s the worst time for me to wake up! Actually it is the best time for me to go to sleep. I think everyone has their own sleep pattern. When I am left to my own devices for a while, I almost always wind up falling asleep between 5 and 6 am, and waking up around lunch time. That seems to work for me! I like the hours when everyone is sleeping because it does feel easier to work and concentrate. But I much prefer to stay up late – getting up early is nearly impossible for me. Witness the times I have tried to get up for sunrise photos. Ha!
Anyway, write when you have time. I know you are busy right now. I am too, and I am also trying to get that other project done! I’m about 65% through the first read-through. Anyway, okay, see you soon!

Ok…the reason I came here…I wanted to ask you about a product that you use (I saw it in a comment on another blog)…your contact page is messed up, it just shows the code for the contact form…

Hey Holly:) You are very observant, lol, that is Dora the Explorer. What is Josh into now? My daughter is 3 but will turn 4 in September. And thank you for the compliment. She joined toontown.com the other day so that has been what she has been playing on her computer this week. I’m not sure if they are available where you are but the big thing here has been webkinz (webkinz.com) for a while. Basically a stuffed animal with a code that you enter online and then have to care of them. It’s so hard for me to say “No” so my daughter ended up with 17 of them and then lost interest:) So now I take care of them. Unless you put them in bed they want to eat all the time – even more than a real pet, lol. Do you still have the traveling website you did for Josh? I wanted to show that to my daughter. Thanks.

Hey Davin, I’m doing really, really good. I think you said on your blog that you had not seen me around in a while. For about a year I really only worked about 1 hour per day mostly answering emails (and not getting around to answering many):) And I found myself going crazy, lol. I did have times when I would do more but not that often. I’ve been a work-a-holic almost my entire life so it was nice to experience things from a different perspective. I came to the realization that I’m really happier just working almost all the time. Lately I’ve been redoing a lot of sites I have. And I’ve got some projects I am working on now that should have been complete in the fall of ’07, lol. I will do them now. For a time I bought a lot of domains, too many – honestly into the 1000′s but only have about 400 now. I had studied endlessly about type in traffic and a guy named Frank Schilling who practically owns the Internet, lol. Ok, I could on and on but I don’t want to ruin this thread so I will leave it at that. I’ll be around. I read your whole blog and wanted to say you’ve got great content. Read all of this one too and Holly has great content too. Take care.

You have me worried a bit. I don’t belief in aliens or telepathy but how on earth did you know exactly what I’m doing…just kidding.
I couldn’t help to have a chuckle when you mentioned Josh and his computer work because my son John-Thomas (2 and a half years old)said we must send Google a letter and ask them if they will give Father Christmas a top10 rating so that he can find his website.
That’s what you get for talking about top10 rankings all day.

Holly,
That was on point! I can tell that I am becoming an Internet Marketer because I exhibit a lot of characteristics. Fun list!
I eat at my desk. Not only that, I play chess while I am eating. I figure that I have to have some other type of hobby besides obsessing over my website stats, layouts, and comments, so chess it is.
If my connection goes down, WATCH OUT EVERYONE! I cannot stand it. In fact, I fired Comcast for their service dropping to much and got ATT. I was nervous because I heard so many horror stories about ATT being slow and what not, but I have been extremely satisfyed.
Only thing worst than a dropped Internet connection IS A SLOW INTERNET CONNECTION! I am liable to go Norman Bates on someone with that crap. If I am at someones house and they have eeewwwww Dial up, I will not even use the computer. I’d rather wait. I have become Internet stuck up like that. LOL!
Finally, sitting at the computer too long is a recipe for disaster! It can ruin your figure, self-esteem and more. So, I have started working out, running to be more specific.
I find that a solid run of 3 to 6 miles gets the cobwebs out of your head and allows you to be more effective. Obviously, I didn’t just get up and start running this distance, but started with one mile and built my way up.
That may be a good post for you, exercise ideas for Internet Marketers. My first recommendation is running, the Perfect Push up!
Love the site, Holly!
I will be hanging around!

Aww Feddie I am so happy you stopped by! You are really funny! I also love your advice – about the running and stepping away from the computer. It can be hard to stay “balanced” while being online so much and doing this type of work. I’ve only recently become this unbalanced and exhibiting these habits I listed. I even cut all my hair off as it was too much work to blow dry it! LOL…I used to be extremely consistent with exercise – YOGA and stretching specifically. I didn’t care about the meditation aspects of it -but just did it on my own for the health benefits. I got really into it and that changed my mental and physical condition totally. I was doing that for a year or two up until several months ago (now i still stretch but not an hour 1/2 like I used to). I even made learncontortion.com for people who were into serious stretching – site seems to be growing.
OK anyway, I am very happy to have you around here. I posted another comment to you on JK’s site

Hilarious post. You make me feel normal now. Not just specifically with Internet Marketing but you know there are tens of thousands of people who can relate to this – gamers, myspacers, researchers, many, many more. The trash can pics are really funny. Sometimes I will have a few empty soda can on my desk along with one I have been drinking. I find myself picking each one up repeatedly to get to one that I am currently drinking. You have solved my problem. I need to get a little trash can, lol:) Can anyone send a current trashcan pic?:)

Hi Holly! Being a newbie to IM, I only rank 4 out of 10 habits, but, I’m proud of the 4 that I have!
#4: Last week I had worn myself down from working so much and had a couple of nights of fever. Really crazy dreams of trying to cloak links, build pages, and somewhere I had some great creative ideas…but lost to a NyQuil Fog!
#5: Since retireing and moving, we have not made any new friends…and I am just fine and dandy with that! My husband and I do fun things, but to be quietly working away in my office online, leaves me with a happy feeling!
#9: My pains are in my back from sitting too much!
#10: I don’t wake up early for I am a Night Owl! I have to MAKE myself turn off the computer by 2am to get to bed. Recently, I have crept in closer to 3am. My husband keeps asking me if my feet fit a limb or if I’m a member of the band “Hooty” and the Blowfish…
Hey, I’m square and proud of it!

It happened to me. Number 2. I dreamed about Search Engine results pages. Google, of course. And yes, I eat at my computer.
I think we might add point to this (at least where some of us are concerned) and that is the avoidance of cooking. When you have so much to do on your laptop, who has time to cook? Well if your desk is nearer to the kitchen it is easier. But I have also sat with my computer in the dining room so that I could stir the black beans periodically and not let them burn.

There is another one I thought of.
When I was on the plane recently from Denmark to Belgium, someone opened a can of Coke a few seats behind me.
It made the usual short fizzing sound, and my first thought was “my husband is online?” because it sounds just like the Yahoo Messenger sound when someone comes online!
Obviously there was no computer open and no Internet connection in the plane that was flying thousands of feet above the ground. It wasn’t Yahoo Messenger, it was a can of Coke! Or maybe tomato juice. But that’s when I realized that being online a lot was really affecting my instincts.

OMG… you are in my head woman…
I don’t shave at the keyboard though… us guys worry too much about running a razor around the neck without looking to see what we’re doing… Ha!
I do have a related odd confession… I use a MacPro (Dual dual core Intel… sweet
) and I have 2 keyboards.
Every so often, I carefully twist tie the USB cord on a keyboard… carefully put it keys down on the top rack of my dishwasher, put just a little little bit of cascade complete in it, and then turn that puppy on.
After its run, with keys still face down, I shake as much water from it as I can, and then put it in a sunny or warm spot, on it’s edge for a few days… within airflow range of a heating vent is great.
Presto! Looks like a brand new keyboard!!!
Of course, I do this, because of # 2
I just need to break down and buy one of those gogeous new Apple keyboards

Trouble is..I am having a fulltime job and am acting like a fulltime Internet marketer as well….yeah I have the habit of waking up 3am and check on my work, emails etc…It really has a bad effect on my work performance and I was caught dozing off at work a few times right in front of my subordinates…
Thank God I manage to live my normal daily live again…but with shortened time for IM, I do not see much improvement in my IM business. Hopefully I can get started in making money from it…

Hurray, I’m not guilty of these things, aside from some posture problems! I’m a traditional marketer with a career in marketing who now uses Internet marketing. The Internet presents all kinds of new marketing options, but it cannot replace the conventional methods that have been getting the job done for decades right into the 90′s. I understand marketing is evolving and I think that helps keep me sane and grounded.

Ha…ha…ha…, this is great Holly! I have to say that pretty much every one applies for me except the caffeine intake. Fortunately for us, we don’t allow it in our home (caffeine.)
I am especially guilty of numbers 2,4 and 10!
Awesome list Holly!
